My Lai
My Lai was a massacre of the unarmed civilians of North Vietnam. Many women and children were killed, and other atrocities were committed. A group of American soldiers snapped and attacked, assaulted, and killed over 500 civilians in Vietnam. -
Withdraw of troops
President Nixon went to a conference with Nguyen Van Thieu on Midway Island. They agreed to slowly withdraw troops from Vietnam while training other Vietnamese troops and not completely abandoning them all at once. This was called Vietnamization. -
Nixon bombs Cambodia
President Nixon authorizes a bombing of Cambodia, to try and stop the cargo transportation to North Vietnam and cut off their supply. Protesters on college campuses found out about this and fought back. The National Guard ended up killing 4 college students. -
ONG fires on KSU
The National Guard at Kent State got into an altercation with fellow Kent State attendees. These college students were protesting the massacre at My Lai, Cambodia. Things got out of hand, and 4 college students ended up dead. -
Gulf of Tonkin repealed
People did not like the way that Nixon was handling the war. People in specific, the "Doves" disagreed with his tactics and pursuit of war in Cambodia and North Vietnam. They believe we never should have been involved in the war in the first place and saw Nixon as out of control. They then repealed the Gulf of Tonkin to try and give the power and authorization back to Congress, where it was originally before the Vietnam War. -
Christmas bombings
Also known as Operation Lineback II, a bombing of Dien Bien Phu. This was a strategic bombing from the USA against North Vietnam. Over 200,000 tons of ordnance were dropped out of planes. This was sought to destroy military and industrial areas. This killed 1,624 civilians. -
Peace with vietnam
The Paris Peace Accords sought to end the war between Vietnam and America. This was the establishment of a ceasefire, the withdrawal of US troops, and the return of American prisoners of war -
The United States pulls out
On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam, finalizing the end of America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War. Thus, it is now observed as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. -
Nixon resigns
Nixon announces his intention to resign from his job as the President of the USA. This statement was delivered on national television, He was in the process of being impeached; however, he resigned, and Nixon became the first US President to resign. -
The Fall of Saigon
This was the last battle of the Vietnam War. The North Vietnam controlled by the Khmer Rouge captured the capital of South Vietnam, capturing the city with it and taking control. After this, the war was over, and the reunification of South and North Vietnam was back under communist rule.
