ESEA
Former President Johnson signed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, ESEA. This bill was created to help lower income and low achieving students receive a better education. It provided more federal funds to lower income areas. This allowed the schools to purchase needed books and supplies for their students and hire more teachers. This bill was created to help close the education gap between communities and make school more inclusive with the same education for everyone. -
Rehabilitation Act
Former President Nixon signed this bill into law in 1973. It was the first law to protect the rights of people with disabilities from discrimination. It prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities in schools that receive government funding. This bill provides support and funds for those with disabilities to help them succeed in life. -
EAHCA
The Education for All Handicapped Children act (EAHCA) is one of the most important laws created for the education of learners who are exceptional. This law required all public schools that receive funding to provide equal access to all students. All public schools must provide FAPE, free and appropriate public education with the least restrictive environment LRE. It also required schools to provide an IEP for students.

EAHCA Amendments
Former President Regan amended the EAHCA act in 1986. This amendment required States to provide free and appropriate public education for children with disabilities ages 3 to 5. It also required States to establish early intervention programs for children with disabilities ages birth- 2 years old. -
ADA
ADA, The American with Disabilities Act protects the civil rights of individuals with disabilities in all areas of their lives. The ADA prevents discrimination against people with disabilities in schools and the workplace. The ADA gives access to places that are private and public to those with disabilities the same as the general public. -
IDEA
IDEA, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act renames and replaces the EAHCA. IDEA protects the confidentiality of students and their families, it also extends provisions to due process. Autism and traumatic brain injury were added to the disability categories. IDEA requires states to provide bilingual education services and individualized transition programs for children with disabilities.
