This was the oldest public school in the US and it helped to shape education as a foundation. It was restrictive with its demographics (no female inclusion), but it still helped by being the start of education. This Schoo focused on latin, greek, and humanities, as it represented European values. -
Gallaudet University
This is the world's first higher education for deaf students. It is located in Washington DC and it was signed through by Abraham Lincoln. They focus on American Sign Language (ASL) and written English equally. -
Council for Exceptional Children
This organization is best known for helping students with exceptionalities -like disabilities or giftedness- succeed. They focus on funding, creating policies, and legal support for these children. The Arc of the United States
This program focuses on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and helps them gain rights. This organization was founded by parents of children with disabilities which wanted an option other than institutionalization. This organization goes beyond rights fro schooling, and it includes employment and community participation. -
Elementary & Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
This law was passed in 1965. The purpose was to help students with economic struggles to be able to access public education system. One of the most known ways they helped was the free and reduced lunch.Timetoast -
Mainstreaming Movement
The purpose of this movement, was to help children who had disabilities to be included in normal classroom settings. This was thought to be a good idea because it would help children with disabilities feel equal, work at a normal pace, and provide social interactions with non disabled peers. One of the challenges is the fact that there wasn't enough resources for accommodations. -
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
This law helps prohibit acts of discrimination against people with disabilities. They gave a key definition of disability, introduced 504 plans, and gave equal access to education. Accommodations like wheelchair ramps were made necessary through this law. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This act helped ensure that children with disabilities get free and appropriate public education. They must also be tested using an unbiased assessment to evaluate the Childs disability. Inclusive Education Advocacy
This was an era that went further than mainstreaming, instead most children, regardless of ability were valued and supported. Some of the key policies that were gained through this advocacy were the No Child Left Behind Act and the UNESCO. This advocacy helped show the importance and effectiveness of inclusivity in schools. -
Every Student Succeeds Act
This act was signed into law by Barrack Obama. It replaced the No Child Left Behind Act and improved the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It gave states more flexibility and power to maintain accountability for all students (even those with disabilities). They help give access to general education, alternate assignments, and individualized support.
