  • Missouri Compromise

    Admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. It also prohibited slave states from forming over the southern border of Missouri(36 degrees 30 minutes latitude). 1/5) After this Compromise slaveholders would begin to fear more and more restricted since there was no limit on free states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Admitted California as a free state. Strengthened the fugitive slave act. Banned slave trade in Washington DC. Established Texas’s borders. Created the Territories of Utah and New Mexico with a choice of free or slave. using popular sovereignty. 4/5) Forced northerners to help prolong the institution of slavery they found so morally wrong. And contributed to the negation of the previous Missouri Compromise Line.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Since the territories of Kansas and Nebraska were open to chose pro or anti slavery by popular vote, this caused lots of people to flock to the state to sway the vote in their favor and also resulted with the two ideologies to attack and kill each other. 5/5) provided proof that American would kill each other over their beliefs and it was only a matter of time before it was a true nationwide conflict.
  • Dred Scott decision

    After being taken in to free territory by his master, Dred Scott sued for his freedom since he was a slave in a state where slavery was illegal. The Court ruled that any person of black African decent were not granted citizenship or the same rights as citizens. 2/5) The fact free African Americans were not granted basic citizenship added to the moral dilemma the North saw in slavery.

    Lower South Seceded

    Beginning with South Carolina, Southern states seceded from the union and created the Confederates States of America. 4/5) There was almost no return from states claiming independence due to the issue of slavery.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    After seceding, South Carolina attacked the fort still controlled by the union. This is regarded as the beginning of the civil war and was the first major event of Lincoln’s presidency. 5/5) Kick started the war, after shots are fired, diplomacy is no longer an option.
