Discontent Grows

  • Proclamation of 1763

This said that colonists couldn't move west past the Appalachian Mountains because Britain wanted to avoid fights with Native Americans. A lot of colonists ignored it and moved west anyways, feeling like Britain was stopping them from using land they had a right to.
  • Sugar Act

This act put taxes on sugar and other goods coming into the colonies and made it harder for people to smuggle them in. This caused colonists such as merchants and traders to get mad, saying Britain was just trying to get more money without letting them have a say.
  • Currency Act

This act stopped colonies from making their own paper money and made them use British currency. Colonials complained and said it hurt their local economies because it made trading and paying debts harder.
  • Declaratory Act

This act took away the Stamp Act but Britain still had full power to make any laws for the colonies. This made colonials happy the Stamp Act was gone but didn't like Britain claiming total control.
  • Stamp Act

This act made people pay for special stamps on paper items like newspapers, contracts, and even playing cards. This caused HUGE protests, boycotts of British goods, and the rise of groups like the Sons of Liberty.
  • Quartering Act of 1765

This act forced colonists to give British soldiers a place to stay and provide them with food and supplies. This made colonists felt it was unfair and like their privacy was being invaded.
  • Townshend Act

This act put taxes on imported goods like glass, paper, paint, and tea. Colonists boycotted more British goods and tension between the sides began to grow.
  • Boston Massacre

British soldiers fired into a crowd during a protest in Boston, killing 5 people and wounded 6. This made colonists see this as proof that Britain was willing to use violence against them, which made more people want to resist.
  • Boston Tea Party

Colonists dressed as Native Americans and dumped British tea into Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act. This outraged the British but colonists saw it as a bold stand for their rights.
  • Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts)

This act punished Massachusetts by closing Boston Harbor which was March 31, 2 additional intolerable acts were added May 20, limiting town meetings, and make the Quartering Act stronger. Colonists worked together in protest and held the First Continental Congress.
  • Quartering Act of 1774

This act updated the old law so soldiers could be housed in private homes if needed. This made colonists EVEN MORE suspicious that Britain wanted military control over them.
  • Quebec Act

This act gave Quebec more land in the Ohio Valley and allowed French Catholics to freely practice their religion. This made colonists angry because they wanted that land and felt Britain was siding with Catholics over them.
