    Gaia Hypothesis

The Gaia Hypothesis was proposed by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis in the 1970s. It said how biology and the evolution of organisms affect the stability of global temperature. This resulted in many environmentalists realizing this effect, and ended up influencing the modern environmental movement as it created the emphasis on evolution in biology in terms of climate change.
  • Earth Day

Provided by UNESCO, the first annual Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970. Earth Day occurs once every year, in which helps people realize the importance of protecting our earth environmentally. This day is important since it provided the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States, which helped kickstart many environmentalists to talk about our environment.
  • Chernobyl

On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant exploded. This resulted in many deaths, an extreme exposure of radiation around the area, and contaminated large amounts of land and water, killing wildlife in the process. This affected Europe's environment for many years on. The Chernobyl disaster is important to the modern environmental movement since it caused people to worry about the effects of nuclear energy and their impact on the environment.
  • Paris Agreement

The Paris Agreement is a document signed by 196 countries to help combat increasing temperature levels. Signed in 2016, this agreement contributes to the modern environmental unit since the agreement includes the majority of nations and an environmental goal to combat climate change.
