Brown v. Board of Education
This Supreme Court case ruled that the separation between blacks and whites (races) in schools was unconstitutional. It argues that separate school systems violates the “Equal Protection Clause”, which is the 14th amendment. The Rehabilitation Act
Section 504 of this act protects those with disabilities from being discriminated and unlawful harassment due to their disability. Organizations are prohibited from denying equal opportunities from individuals with disabilities. Education for All Handicapped Children Act
The Education for All Handicapped Children’s Act was intended to provide students with disabilities appropriate education created for their individualized needs. As part of the students’ evaluations parents are involved as well as incorporating students with disabilities with other students without these disabilities. They wanted to ensure that students with disabilities as well as their parents were protected and received free and appropriate education. -
Office of Special Ed. Programs
The Office of Special Education Programs purpose is to provide support and assist those with disabilities beginning from birth to the age of 21. They also strive to assist states and local districts. OSEP works with IDEA to guide those that need it such as training parents, providing support, information, etc. -
The Americans with Disabilities Act
The ADA protects anyone with disabilities from being discriminated in their everyday and public life. These include voting, public transportation, employment, services, etc. It is also required for employers supply accommodations that may be needed. -

This act provides students with disabilities free appropriate public education. IDEA makes it essential that schools designs specific special education services that meets the student’s unique educational needs. No Child Left Behind Act
The reason behind the No Child Left Behind Act was to improve the primary and secondary schools by each school demonstrating how the students are achieving academically. This signified that teachers were also held accountable based on their quality of teaching. The demonstrations usually involved standardized testing to see how students were progressing in their education. -
Assistive Technology Act
Assistive Technology is used to help those with disabilities take part in any daily activities. This technology is used to meet the specific needs of individuals throughout their life. Overall, this act allows those with disabilities to also be with those that don’t have any disabilities and participate in the same activities as others in their community. -
Individuals with Disabilities Ed. Improvement
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 also known as IDEA 4 has been amended various times. The purpose of this act is to provide children with the education that meets their specific needs. This act was created to prepare children with disabilities for their future, whether it’s education, jobs, and their way of living. IDEA 4 also seeks out to assure that children with disabilities and their parents rights are protected. -
Every Student Succeeds Act
The ESSA is a recent version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. This helps set expectations for where students should be in education and aids and provides resources to help students achieve. This builds a school system in which holds the public schools accountable for students’ success.
