    Spanish-American War

    The Spanish-American War was caused because Spain refused to withdraw from Cuba, USS Maine, which was sent by the United States to aid Cuba, exploded, and the Spanish Ambassador wrote the de Lome Letter, which insulted President McKinley and pushed him to declare war. As a result of the war, Spain left Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States, and the Philippines were sold to the United States. The United States became a world power.

    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    A terrorist group called the Black Hand assassinates Austria-Hungary's Archduke Franz Ferdinand, but Austria-Hungary believes that Serbia is responsible for the assassination and declares war. Austria-Hungary and Serbia both had alliances with other European countries, and these countries joined forces with Austria-Hungary and Serbia to begin the Great War, as it was known then.

    World War I

    Began following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The machine gun war invented and trench warfare was used during this time. The United States remained neutral until Germany attacks an American passenger ship and sends the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico asking them for assistance in invading the United States. The Treaty of Versailles placed the sole blaim for the war on Germany, placing them in debt and causing anger in German citizens that eventually led to World War II.

    This Amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, transportation, or consumption of alcohol and was ratified under President Wilson. This Amendment led to increased citizen resentment of the federal government, increased organized crime, and establishment of speakeasies.

    Began following Germany's invasion of Poland. Germany was led by Adolf Hitler, who used residual anger from World War I to gain power. The United States remains neutral until Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. D-Day was the United States' invasion of France to get to Germany, leading to the German surrender. The Holocaust, which was the mass genocide of mostly Jewish people, took place during this time, from which the Jewish population has still not recovered.

    Following Germany's surrender, Japan was still actively fighting in the Pacific. Because Japan didn't surrender, the United States drops an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan and threatened to do it again if they did not.

    Because Japan still did not surrender following the bombing of Hiroshima, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, and threatened to drop yet another bomb if Japan still did not surrender. Japan surrendered.

    The United States stays neutral during World War II for 2 years, but when Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, a United States military base in Hawaii, President Roosevelt responds by declaring war and joins the Allies.

    American troops invaded the beaches of German-occupied Normandy, France in order to gain an advantage against Germany. The United States eventually invaded Germany, which lead to Germany's surrender.

    Cold War

    The Cold War was a battle-less war between the United States and the Soviet Union, or between democracy and communism. Features within the War include the USSR's blockade of West Berlin and the US airlifting supplies into West Berlin, the Korean War when each world power supported their respective government, the Red Scare when people accused people of being communist, and the Cuban Missile Crisis when President Kennedy decided against starting a nuclear war in response to a potential threat.

    The Korean War was a war between North and South Korea in which the communist USSR supported communist North Korea and the democratic United States supported democratic South Korea. The United States participated in this war as a result of their communist containment policy, and the war ended with the border between North and South Korea around the same latitude line that it had been at before the war.

    This Amendment states that a President can only serve for two terms, following the precedent set by President Washington, and was ratified by President Truman. This Amendment was passed following the death of President Roosevelt during his fourth term in the Presidential office.
