This created a licensing system, to control who can operate on the radio. This made it so you had to apply for radio frequency. This prevented amateurs from having easy access and began the governments oversight on radio that transitioned to TV. -
The Creation of RCA
RCA (Radio Corporation of America) is formed in 1919 after WW1. The government takes control of the radio and grants RCA a monopoly of it with their oversight. Under RCA there were companies like GE and Westinghouse that handled hardware and ATT that handled transmission. They created network broadcasting which starts over the air waves through electromagnetic frequencies for nearby and nationally through phone lines, taking original transmission tower to other towers across the country. -
Radio Act of 1927
This act creates federal radio commission, which is now the FCC. The act regulated access and frequency. It establishes standards and licensing conditions. the standards were known as PICAN, which is still used today. the standards deem what is for public interest, convince and necessity. it was purposely vague so they can decide who gets on air ways -
Studio One
CBS's Studio One ran from 1948 to 1958 it aimed at middle class viewers. It would put on live televised play and novel adaptions. A producer named Tony Miner came from broadway and widely credited for bringing broadway to TV. There programs utilized a three act structure that allowed for commercial breaks at suspenseful moments between acts. The narrative focused programs and commercial break placement gave roots to modern TV standard. (Raw, 2009 p. 94) -
64,000 Question
The premiere of 64,000 Question started the quiz show craze in 1955 it is a great example of the Single Sponsorship Model. The sponsor Revlon commissioned an advertisement agency to produce a show as an outlet to advertise their product to mass national audiences, the ad agency came up with the quiz show concept and got the network CBS to air it (PBS) -
Quiz Show Scandal
The quiz show Twenty-One got caught rigging the game show. This led to congressional hearings that allowed for the single sponsorship model to end, causing the networks to gain power of production, ending the Golden Era of Television (PBS) -
