    The Stamp Act of 1765 was a law that made colonists pay extra money for paper items like newspapers and legal documents. Many people were angry because they didnt have a decision. It caused protests and helped bring the colonies closer to fighting for their freedom.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre happened on March 5 1770 when British soldiers fired into a group of colonists killing five people. Tensions had been going up in Boston due to the presence of British enforcing unpopular taxes. The event made anti British sentiment and became a big spark leading to the American Revolution.

    The Boston Tea Party was a protest by American colonists in 1773 angry about British taxes on tea. Disguised as Mohawk Indian they snuck onto ships in Boston Harbor and put tons of tea into the water. It was a turning point that helped the American Revolution.

    The Intolerable Acts were laws passed by Britain to punish the colonists after the Boston Tea Party. They closed Boston Harbor and took away some of the colonies rights. This made many colonists even more mad and pushed them closer to starting a revolution.

    The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first shots fired in the American Revolution in April 1775. Tensions had been rising and when British troops tried to get weapons from the colonists local militias stood their ground. No one expected a full battle but once the shooting started there was no stoping it.

    The Second Continental Congress met in 1775 after fighting had already started between the colonies and Britain. The leaders talked about what to do next and decided to create an army choosing George Washington as the leader. They also started talking about breaking away from Britain.

    The Battle of Bunker Hill happened on June 17 1775 during the American Revolutionary War. Although the British won the battle they suffered a lot casualties which boosted the American colonists. Most of the fighting actually happened on nearby Breeds Hill.

    The Sons of Liberty were a group of colonists who wanted freedom from British rule. They protested against unfair taxes and sometimes caused trouble to make their point like the Boston Tea Party. People saw them as heroes standing up for their rights.

    The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4 1776 when the colonies decided to break away from Britain. It said that all people have rights and that the government should protect those rights. By signing it the colonies were officially saying they wanted to be their own country.

    The Battle of Trenton happened on December 26 1776 after George Washington did a surprise attack on Delaware river. The Continental Army defeated the Hessian forces stationed in Trenton New Jersey getting nearly 1,000 prisoners. This victory boosted a lot American morale and revived support for the Revolutionary cause.

    The Battle of Camden was on August 16 1780 was a big defeat for the American forces in the Southern campaign of the Revolutionary War. Leader was General Horatio Gates the Americans were not so good on supplies while the British General Cornwallis were ready. The loss was really bad for American morale.

    The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 and officially ended the American Revolution. It said that the United States was now a free and independent country. The treaty also gave the new nation more land and set the borders.

    The 3/5 Compromise was an agreement made during the Constitutional Convention about how to count enslaved people for voting and taxes. They decided to count each enslaved person as three-fifths of a person. This helped the Southern states have more power in the government, but it was unfair to the enslaved people.

    The Constitutional Convention took place in 1787 to fix the problems with the old government rules. Leaders from different states met and decided to create a whole new plan which became the U.S. Constitution. It set up how the government would work and gave more power to a strong national government.

    The Enlightenment when people started to think more about reason science and new ideas. They began to question old rules and wanted more freedom and fairness. These ideas helped shape governments and inspired the American Revolution.
